Awards spotlight youth-led efforts to create positive social change

Baltimore, Maryland, USA - A formerly homeless youth working to help street children create new lives in Nairobi, Kenya, a Palestinian youth who uses the power of music to promote peace, and a young American who is mobilizing citizens and communities throughout the U.S. to put an end to genocide are among the winners of this year's YouthActionNet awards.

"Each of the twenty winners has developed creative solutions to urgent social challenges," said YouthActionNet Manager Ashok Regmi. "Their efforts reflect a growing global youth movement as young people work across national borders and harness the power of technology to contribute to their local and global communities."

Launched in 2001 by the International Youth Foundation (IYF) and Nokia, YouthActionNet is a program that invests in the power and promise of young people to create positive change.

Among the winners of the 2006 YouthActionNet awards are:

- Twenty-three year-old Selene Biffi, who established Youth Action for Change, a web-based initiative in Italy, that has trained thousands of young people in over 80 countries to be change-makers in their communities;

- Michael Eskenazi, 25, of Israel, who is leading efforts to promote greater understanding and dialogue among Israeli and Palestinian young professionals; and

- Gautam Gupta, age 23, who founded Activists in Action for Women, AIDS & Justice in India, to advocate on behalf of victims of domestic violence and rape.

Ranging in age from 18 to 28, the award winners come from diverse backgrounds, but share a common goal to mobilize their peers and others in solving urgent social challenges.  They were chosen following a peer review process in which previous recipients of YouthActionNet awards select the next round of awardees.  Each winner is awarded US$500 to support his or her work, receives visibility through electronic and print materials, and becomes eligible to participate in international meetings sponsored through YouthActionNet.

IYF and Nokia first announced the YouthActionNet awards competition in January 2002.  To date, nearly 100 young change-makers have received awards, with applications having been submitted by more than 2,700 young people representing over 60 countries.  Recipients are selected on an annual basis, with applications currently being accepted for the next round of awards to be announced in July 2007.

Through its awards program, dynamic website, advocacy, training, and networking opportunities, YouthActionNet offers young leaders ideas, resources, and connections to like minds around the world.

LG Chocolate with Verizone Wireless are taking the global handset market by storm PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Wednesday, 02 August 2006

The second widely spread USA mobile operator Verizone Wireless produced new cell phone with MP3 player functions and design similar to iPod device of Apple Computer.

Practically all large USA cell phone operators have services that allow customers to download songs and ringtones onto the cell phones and then recopy them to the PC.

New cell phone model for Verizon was manufactured by Korean LG Electronics and called Chocolate. Available exclusively for Verizon Wireless customers since 7th of July, Chocolate is the ultimate mobile phone, loaded with hot features, such as V CAST, V CAST Music, and fabulous tools like VZ Navigator(SM), all packaged within a smooth slider design. Chocolate by LG is available today for $149.99 after a $50 instant online discount and new two-year customer agreement. V CAST Music songs cost $0.99 if purchased from the PC or $1.99 if purchased and downloaded over the air onto a V CAST Music phone.

"We agree, Chocolate by LG is this year's must-have mobile device," said Mr. Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A, Inc. "With sophisticated American users in mind, this is the next generation of the Chocolate design for the U.S. Verizon Wireless' features and functionalities, such as V CAST and V CAST Music, make Chocolate the ultimate entertainment and communication device."

Cell phone manufacturers and service providers have been making big moves to eat into the field of portable digital media, dominated by Apple Computer's iPod. But there are still hurdles to overcome. After the tepid response to the Motorola Rokr--the product of a partnership with Apple for iTunes software--companies like Sprint have tried to improve on the model of a media-rich phone by offering the capacity for more songs, faster downloads and better compatibility with PCs.

Motorola introduces MotoID, a music application that identifies songs played while go! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Wednesday, 02 August 2006
Motorola will soon introduce MotoID, a new application that will be preloaded into specific handset models, and that will allow users in Latin America to identify the title and the artist of many popular songs being played, while on the go! With the introduction of MotoID Motorola will provide users a one of a kind music experience that is essential to Motorola’s leadership in the mobile music space in Latin America.

“Imagine being able to identify and download music content on the go! – Motorola’s MotoID service will allow users to identify, in just a few seconds, a song being played, only by holding the phone near the music source and, after receiving the song information, immediately downloading content associated to that song! ”, said Chip Leon, Marketing Director for Latin America, Motorola. “Motorola’s MotoID service will become one of the most important success stories towards our music vision. As the preferred handset brand for connected mobile music, we allow our users to experience music on the go; at the same time, we empower our operator customers to monetize their music relationships”.

Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam said: ‘‘We are delighted to be extending our relationship with Motorola, who are the leading handset provider in the Latin American market. Our collaboration will set the bar for mobile music recognition, reinforcing Motorola’s and Shazam joint commitment to lead the development of mobile music offerings which will significantly enhance consumer’s ability to discover and purchase music in the most convenient and efficient way possible.’’

The MotoID application, which Motorola will soon start to preload into specific handset models for Latin America, will benefit users by providing relevant songs information and by giving the option to purchase and download relevant content such as the song’s ringtone, screensaver or wallpaper . The end user need only to pay for the data charges associated with use of the phone’s WAP browser, and of course any content they choose to purchase.

How does MotoID work?
If the user would like to obtain information of a song that is being played in the disco, in the car, on the radio, on the TV or anywhere, he or she must click the MotoID Java™ or BREW® application (depending on the mobile phone and operator) from their Motorola handset, then hold the handset close to the music source and press the “Identify song” key, and in a few seconds, the mobile phone will receive the name of the song, the artist and the album. Then if available, user will also have the option to download the song’s ringtone, screensaver or wallpaper . Motorola offers this service in an agreement with Shazam, a leader in audio identification technology.
With MotoID, Motorola continues its leadership in mobile music trends and its development of solutions that simplify and improve users’ experiences. Network dependent feature, not available in all areas. MotoID’s capabilities are limited by the number of songs in its database, currently 3,200,000. Content is subject to availability, which varies by market and/or carrier, and is sold separately.

Certain mobile phone features may not be available throughout the entire network or their functionality may be limited. All features, functionality and other product specifications are subject to change without notice or obligation.

Scarf for cell phones. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Wednesday, 02 August 2006
This miracle scarf reminds me cap of darkness. By the way cap is coming up for sale as well. Where do we get such an extraordinary cell phone accessories?

They are from Norway and are made by Handy Fashion. Miracle scarves are fancy and at the same time a very special technical feature, because they protect you effectively against radiation from mobile phones.

The metal silver gloom makes the scarfs stylish and not only looks very nice on your head and fits to most of the colours of your wardrobe but protects you against microwaves.

You can put your cell to the ear and speak as long as you want. No microwaves will affect on you because you are protected by the miracle scarf which costs about 100$.

But it’s said it is not the only dignity. With its help you can also be “invisible” for the other phones. Wrapping your cell phone into a miracle scarf you will be out of range, that’s all.
