Sanyo SCP-2400 New Phone with Parental Control Feature PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Thursday, 29 June 2006

2400To help parents stay connected with their children and maintain some control of their children's wireless phone usage, Sprint  and SANYO today introduce the Sprint PCS Vision® Phone SCP-2400 by SANYO.

This phone offers a free parental control feature, allowing parents to easily manage whom the child calls and who can call the child. A parent simply enters the phone numbers of those individuals the child is permitted to call and/or receive calls from in the phone's address book, and then clicks on the Parental Control icon on the main menu to limit use to Phone Book Only for both incoming and/or outgoing direct calls. After the parent limits the phone's use in this way, other phone numbers would be restricted. Parents can also lock services like Sprint PCS Ready Link and Sprint PCS Vision, which can help the child to avoid data charges that may not be included as part of the families' wireless pricing plan.

In addition to the parental usage control feature, this affordable phone will be offered in stylish colors (Silver Sky, Midnight Black, Dark Bronze, True Blue and Misty Rose) that appeal to "tweens" and teens. The SCP-2400 by SANYO supports Sprint PCS Vision®, Sprint PCS Ready Link®, SMS Voice and Text Messaging, and Wireless Backup. An optional accessory pack will be available to complement the phone, including a Quick Start Guide for setting restrictions on the phone, a gift card for a customizable "skin" (i.e. sticker) for the child to outfit the phone, and a backpack clip for the child to secure the phone while on the go.

"Parents want the ability to stay connected with their children as they become more mobile. They also want peace of mind knowing they can maintain some control of their child's wireless usage and spending," said Danny Bowman, vice president of product marketing for Sprint. "The SCP-2400 by SANYO is a great option for parents, as it allows parents to quickly set restrictions on the phone, and its flexibility allows parents to customize their settings to meet the specific needs of each child or modify restrictions as their needs change over time."

"IDC research indicates that the trend of parents providing cell phones to younger age groups, increasingly 10-14-year-olds, will continue based on the popularity and affordability of family share plans and the general 'always in touch' value proposition of wireless that resonates well with parents," said Scott A. Ellison, vice president of wireless and mobile communications for IDC.

"The parental control feature on the SCP-2400 is designed to assist parents, and it can be used as a tool to help teach children wireless usage responsibility. The controls are simple for the parent to manage and select services can be turned on or off as the parent wishes," said Andy Kodera, senior vice president and general manager of SANYO Fisher Company's Wireless Communications Division. "Also, the colors and high quality speakerphone will appeal to tweens and teens," Kodera added.

In addition to the SCP-2400 by SANYO, Sprint offers family-friendly services such as Sprint Family Locator, a location-based service that uses GPS technology to enable a parent to locate up to four of his or her children's devices, such as the SCP-2400 by SANYO, by using a compatible Sprint phone or a PC. Once a child is located using the service, the child receives a text message notification that the phone has been located, and the parent is provided a map along with the address, surrounding landmarks, and accuracy of the location within a specified radius. Sprint Family Locator is permission based and password protected and is a service that supports open communication between a parent and child.

Nokia Mobile TV trials in Sweden PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Wednesday, 28 June 2006

Nokia announced a new commercial DVB-H pilot in Stockholm with Teracom in Sweden. Nokia is supplying the Nokia Mobile Broadcast System 3.0 and Nokia N92 mobile TV devices to the pilot which will last from October to December 2006 and includes 400 consumers. The project is a co-operation between ATG, Boxer, Nokia, Sveriges Radio, Sveriges Television/UR, Telenor and Teracom.

The pilot participants will be able to watch fourteen TV channels and listen to four radio channels in the Stockholm city region, where a network has been built for high quality indoor and outdoor coverage. The objective is to evaluate what Swedish consumers think about commercial broadcast mobile TV.

ATG, Boxer, Sveriges Radio and Sveriges Television will provide content for the pilot. The test will be delivered using Nokia Mobile Broadcast Solution 3.0, and the pilot participants will use mobile devices from Nokia, the Nokia N92. Teracom will be responsible for the network, the broadcast and operating of the platform.

We strongly believe in the capability of the DVB-H technology as well as in the mobile TV service, and we are looking forward to presenting the full potential and interest of broadcast mobile TV in Sweden," says Sigurd Leth, Multimedia Director for Nokia Nordic.

This is the second mobile TV pilot in Sweden where Nokia is one of the main suppliers of DVB-H technology. Last week, Nokia announced a new contract with TeliaSonera Sweden for a complete DVB-H pilot system, including Nokia Mobile Broadcast System 3.0 and Nokia N92 mobile TV devices, underpinned by Nokia's hosting and systems integration know-how.

DVB-H technology complements existing operator networks, optimizing capacity and quality. It offers consumers the chance to enjoy high quality terrestrial digital broadcasts along with voice telephony and internet access all in a single device. Broadcast mobile TV will offer new business opportunities for mobile service providers, content and broadcast companies, infrastructure and handset manufacturers as well as technology providers.

The feedback from different mobile TV pilots has been promising. Results from pilots on broadcast (DVB-H) mobile TV services amongst consumers in Finland, the UK, Spain and France have revealed clear consumer demand for such services as well as important indications over future business models for commercial mobile TV services.

Microsoft and Motorola Form Strategic Alliance PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Tuesday, 27 June 2006

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) and Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced a multiyear joint marketing and development alliance to deliver unified communications solutions using Microsoft® Office Communications Server 2007 across Motorola mobile devices and network hardware. The collaboration is intended to enable enterprise customers to seamlessly connect and share information in real time regardless of location, network or device.

HC700The initial planned offering will start with the Motorola HC700 series rugged mobile computing devices and the Motorola Q™ smart phone. The offering will combine the presence awareness and instant messaging (IM) capabilities of Communications Server 2007 with Motorola’s Windows Mobile® 5.0-based devices through the integration of Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile with Motorola’s MOTOPRO™ Mobility Suite and Wireless Services Manager (WSM) products, enabling users to seamlessly communicate and collaborate across heterogeneous access networks.

As a result, Microsoft and Motorola customers of Communications Server 2007 will benefit from added functionality and increased connectivity to colleagues, strategic partners and customers using the applications, devices and networks they rely on most.

“The alliance with Motorola will help us deliver on our unified communications vision, which centers on simplifying how people connect with one another, find information and collaborate in teams regardless of where they are or what devices they’re using,” said Gurdeep Singh Pall, corporate vice president of the Unified Communications Group at Microsoft. “In concert with Motorola’s mobility solutions, we can take unified communications to the next level and provide additional benefits, including advanced mobility features — such as seamless roaming between different wireless networks and Wi-Fi hot spots — to our mutual customers.”

The solution will enable users to access Communicator Mobile on Motorola Windows Mobile-based devices, further extending the capabilities of unified communications across the mobile environment. The solution is designed to enable enterprises to have the opportunity to benefit from faster decision-making; greater productivity across workgroups and the remote work force; and improved relationships with customers, partners and suppliers. In addition, IT administrators can access a richer end-to-end infrastructure with an emphasis on reliability, scalability and security, while the general work force benefits from higher-quality, uninterrupted communications and more robust media experiences across these applications, devices and services.

“With this strategic alliance, Motorola and Microsoft intend to bring seamless mobility to unified communications, extending the benefits of enhanced collaboration to the world’s increasingly mobile and global work force,” said John DeFeo, corporate vice president of Enterprise Products at Motorola. “Integrating Microsoft’s leading unified communications platform with the unique ‘push-to’ and seamless multi-network handoff capabilities enabled by Motorola will provide a best-in-class experience for mobile users.”

Both companies will work to integrate Communications Server 2007 and Communicator Mobile with Motorola’s recently launched MOTOPRO Mobility Suite, an integrated software platform that enables rapid mobile application design and deployment coupled with enterprise-class device security and management. The technology will also be integrated with Motorola’s WSM product, which facilitates the seamless handoff between WAN, LAN and cellular networks, providing contiguous communication even as enterprise users move from one network to another.
