Most cellular phones are a treasure trove of data, often containing dozens of names, addresses and phone numbers. Can you recover and transfer the data if your phone is ever lost or stolen? A company here called Sp
ark Technology has just released its thumbdrive-sized CellStik which can back up contacts with a single button. Contacts can be edited on a computer later, and then transferred to a replacement phone.
Available for LG, Samsung, and Motorola cellular phones, the CellStik looks like your average USB keychain drive, but when you take off the protective plastic caps, you'll find two connectors: one for the cell phone, the other for standard USB. Once connected to your cellular phone, you push the button labeled "Save to CellStik". This transfers as many as 1,000 contacts to the flash memory of the unit, which can later be transferred to a computer, and edited with Spark's CellStik Central application. After that, the edited contacts can be transferred back to the old phone, or to some other phone.
As the user upgrades her phone, she'll be able to update her CellStik by means of a Web page, and transfer contacts to her new phone. Lee commented that people don't memorize phone numbers anymore, preferring instead to enter them manually into their cell phones, and look them up using its directory. "Backing up your contacts saves the embarrassment of sending out a mass e-mail, telling people that you've lost your phone," said Lee.
