The iPhone 3G was just recently announced and already there is a cheaper, but definitely less stylish option trying to cash in on a comparison.  The HOP1809 from Hop-On features 3G technology as well as video calls and wireless data.  It is made of lightweight aluminum and is smaller in both length and width than the iPhone.

However, I really don’t think that’s going to sway a whole lot of people.  In the end the iPhone is a lot more prestigious, both in brand name and in looks alone.  It will be released in Q3 of this year and will be sold for under $125 whereas the 3G iPhone will go for $199.
