T-Mobile USA confirms that FCC granted the company 120 spectrum licenses covering the continental United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands, Alaska and major markets including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. The granting of these licenses fulfills T-Mobile’s winning bids during the recent FCC Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) auction.
According to Robert Dotson, president and CEO, T-Mobile is pleased to receive its AWS license grants from the FCC. The agency is to be commended for moving so rapidly to award these licenses. This acquisition of spectrum has doubled T-Mobile’s spectrum position in the top 100 U.S. markets, which will facilitate a planned 2007 commercial rollout of 3G next-generation-network services to enhance core voice services, and deliver applications that will take consumer-based PC functionality mobile. The next generation network will allow customers to use higher speed data over the air through UMTS or HSDPA which are the upgrades to the current GPRS and EDGE. A main advantage of the high-speed is also the option for Video Calling, which unfortunately is still not offered in the States. By T-Mobile |
