Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that they have developed a child-friendly 3G mobile phone, the Foma SA800i, as well as the ‘Imadoco Search’ location service. The handset is designed to fit a child’s hand and can be programmed with up to f
ive phone numbers that the child may call using a direct call button. 'Imadoco Search' enables parents to monitor a child's location via mobile phone.
The SA800i is primarily designed to help keep children safe, the company said. The handset features a 100-decibel alarm that children can switch on in case of an emergency. When the alarm is activated, the handset will call up to three pre-programmed numbers with a voice message alert at regular intervals until either all numbers answer the call or a password is entered on the child’s handset.
With the ‘Imadoco Search’ (imadoco is Japanese for ‘Where are you now?’) location service, parents can set their phones to automatically receive e-mails announcing their child’s location. They can also choose to receive an e-mail when the child’s handset is turned off; the child’s location can still be monitored after the handset is turned off. The service costs 210 yen (about €1.5) per month for up to five children, plus an addition 5.2 yen (€0.04) for each location search. |
