Motorola RAZR V3x review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin
Thursday, 02 March 2006
Motorola has hit the nail on the head with its RAZR and is now no simply enjoying the laurels but exploiting this success to the full. As the sales of the original RAZR grew the names of other models were reconsidered. And so Motorola v1150 has miraculously turned into RAZR V3x This was done to emphasize that the sibling is as tender and slim as its famous predecessor. The strategy turned out to be safe and after the second announcement with a new name the handset arouse keen interest. In addition the offspring had new functionality such as for instanse 2 Mp camera (one of the first with Motorola). It was also a considerable technical step for the company for that was the first time when the company transferred standard hardware and software platform to high resolution displays.

Sony Ericsson W900i review: dashingly twirling PDF Print E-mail

Appearance and design
New Sony Ericsson W900i is announced to be a “breakthrough to the third generation of mobile service”. The indication of the model W900i shows that it belongs to Walkman line. However the novelty can be proud not only of its musical abilities. A large screen 2Mp camera and wide communicative possibilities will come to the liking of any Hi-Tech fancier.
The phone case is made of a glossy plastic pleasant to touch, the material of the keypad is the same only mat. There are two color variants – black (with hardly noticeable silvery specks of “metallic” type) and white. The color spectrum and the absence of removable panels correspond to the phone class and besides tone with its strict (one may even call it a bit rough) design.

Sony Ericsson W900i can be either black or white but we think the latter variant is more suitable for a high-tech device so we took a black one for testing

The phone case is made of a glossy plastic pleasant to touch, the material of the keypad is the same only mat. Despite considerable dimensions the phone lies very handy in hand and does not slip at all. The form factor of the novelty is a “rotator” that is the phone opens by the upper part 180-degree turn. To close the phone one needs to turn it in the counter direction. So it is not possible to make 360-degree turn – there is a stop in the upper point. Due to the construction one needs to turn the phone upside down once it was opened: in the opened and in the closed state upper and lower panel are differently directed. Though like other Sony Ericsson rotators showed one gets used to it very quickly. However it is hard to put up with the phone dimensions – it is unambiguously massive and that is its main drawback

Siemens S75 Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kristin

Appearance and design

BenQ Mobile releases the new S75. As the index helpfully shows us it is to crown the 75 th series. Setting aside 3G models that virtually belong to the same line, the S75 has truly become the most advanced phone having embraced latest innovations of the company.

The first impression is the phone got much smaller if compared to its predecessor the 65th one. Its weight is 99 gram. The measurements of the phone are 103 mm x 47 mm x 18 mm. The device is designed in the classical monoblock form-factor. The front face is made from varnished plastic. If the quality of surface brings back memories of your favourite piano do not wonder for the black variant of the phone is called “Piano Black”. A silver variant called "Zirconia" also looks rather attractive.

A display naturally occupies the upper part of the front face. The quality of matrix is beyond praise. The screen does not fade even in direct sunrays. The phone displays 262 thousand colours and has a resolution of 132 x 176 pixels. The matrix diagonal is 1.8 inches. The screen does not seem to be as huge as it does with 65 th series phones, but it does not evoke any negative feelings . The display is framed in a narrow silver edging.

The loud speaker is set in a front face slit over the screen and is covered with a stylish silvery mesh. Below it one can see a logotype of the producer (which is still Siemens).

Nokia 8800 Review PDF Print E-mail

Style Attired in Steel

Appearance and design
The history of metallic Nokia sliders comprises more than one generation. The first of them, Nokia 8810, appeared when the notion of “slider” was not so boosted yet. Its descendant – Nokia 8800 – maintains the best features of the kind. It includes the Nokia style and powerful (as for the image model) functioning and charisma of the successful businessman's phone.

To open the phone one needs to set a thumb against a special relief spot with a pattern consisting of shallow apertures for the thumb not to slide off.

In Nokia 8800 the sliding part includes both display and the keypad. A curious reader may object that we saw such construction in Nokia 8910/8910i. It is not fully so. In the models mentioned above the hand holds only case while the phone itself “shoots out” of it. In Nokia 8800 the fixed part is not a mere case it contains an in built main phone chip plus battery plus other essential parts

The phone is equipped with semi-automatic mechanism. Unlike Nokia 8910/8910i where user has to press two side buttons to make the telephone “shoot out” on its own in Nokia 8800 user is to drive the sliding part half way and the rest of the trip it'll do on its own due to a special spring. On the other hand the reverse process is also semi-automatic while Nokia 8910/8910i is to be closed manually which sometimes takes pains – at least it is difficult (if possible at all) to fulfil such operation with the help of only one hand for the spring is to be led up for the next “shot”.

A bit disappointing was the fact that there is no sound accompaniment on slider opening/closing. The majority of modern sliders are able to emit various kinds of warbles while being either opened or closed. However this action in Nokia 8800 is accompanied with such an expressive natural sound that artificial effects could seem redundant in the situation at hand. As usual phone opening/closing corresponds to receiving/ending the call.

As it was mentioned above Nokia 8800 is almost completely made of solid steel (with the exception of the scratchproof screen and the upper rear part concealing the build in antenna. If that part were made of steel the phone would fail to maintain a stable connection with the base station). The screen is really scratchproof – we tried our best to leave at least the smallest trace using a sharp penknife and all imagination we had but in vain. The effect is really amazing.

Now a few words more about the screen. It supports 262.000 colours. This is the first “non- smartphone ” from Nokia with such ability. The resolution of TFT-matrix is 208x208 pixels, the same as in Nokia 6230i. The display became even more staunch to direct sunrays: you do not need to seek the right angle to see something.

That is how the display looks in the sun:

One of the problems of all image phones with smooth mirror-like surfaces is fingerprints left on it. Nokia 8800 is not an exception.

The rear of the phone

If one takes phone in hand naturally than a clearly seen fingerprint left by forefinger remains on the rear of the deck.

The fingerprints are also seen on the screen and on the metallic parts (though to lesser extent)
The steel battery cover is taken off easily and at the same time is fixed firm almost without backlash.
The phone is solidity in flesh. It looks and feels very prestigious. You understand at once that this is a real something not just some China trinket. (dimensions of the phone are 107x45x16.5 mm, weight 134 gram). Some suppose that Nokia 8800 is a link between image phones Nokia 8910/8910i and Vertu line for Nokia 8800 and steel Vertu Black look alike.
From left to right: Nokia 8800 from steel, Nokia 8910i from alloy containing titanium, Mobiado Professional from anodized aluminium, Vertu Black Leather from steel

There are no side means of control only battery fastening
Functionality
Camera
There is no special key to activate the camera. It is activated either be pressing navigation key up or from menu. The shot is fixed with the OK key.
After camera mode is activated up/down keys zoom in/out the object; the left/right keys choose the format of shooting – either album photo (800x600) or filming (176x144). There is no portrait photo or any other variants. There is night shooting as a separate mode. The valve sound can be either on or off. After the photo is taken it can be supplied with frame, text, animation, other picture.

In camera menu there is choice of resolution (either 800x600 or 120x144), image quality (high, usual, base), filming quality (high and low) length of the track (shortened for MMS or maximum), file name.

Menu:

The main menu of Nokia 8800 is very much alike with that of Nokia 6230i both in appearance and in contents so we'll dwell on the peculiarities.

In Messages maximum size of MMS is increased to 300kb like in Nokia 6230i that means that user can send full-size photos, videotracks a.o . information if the carrier supports MMS of such size.

In call register there are not only received/missed/dialed calls but also GPRS traffic statistics.
The phonebook is the same as in previous models. It has modes of only SIM-card entries, only phone entries or mixed with marking where it is saved. In one entry you can store name, phone numbers (in all 5 of them: common, cell phone, home, work, fax), email, WEB-address, post address, ID number, note, picture. Ringtone can not be assigned to individual person – only to a certain group. By the way a picture can also be assigned to a caller group
We have noticed several disadvantages. For instance when forming an entry one can not take a photo of the person to assign a picture to the entry. To do that one has to enter camera mode and then return to phonebook. The system is the same as in Nokia 6230i.
