Motorola RAZR V3x review PDF Print E-mail

Motorola has hit the nail on the head with its RAZR and is now no simply enjoying the laurels but exploiting this success to the full. As the sales of the original RAZR grew the names of other models were reconsidered. And so Motorola v1150 has miraculously turned into RAZR V3x This was done to emphasize that the sibling is as tender and slim as its famous predecessor. The strategy turned out to be safe and after the second announcement with a new name the handset arouse keen interest. In addition the offspring had new functionality such as for instanse 2 Mp camera (one of the first with Motorola). It was also a considerable technical step for the company for that was the first time when the company transferred standard hardware and software platform to high resolution displays.

Appearance and design

The design of the phone is interesting, not trite and has little if anything in common with the original RAZR which attracts still more attention to it. The body of the phone is made of so called soft touch plastic. It is monocolored but for the silvery side edging enframing the phone. The phone is not actually that slim. The dimensions are 99x53x19.8mm similar to many other phones. There is one peculiar thing about the handset dimensions: subjectively it seems larger than it is in fact, though it may also depend on the color of the phone: so dark variants look heavier than for example silvery one. So one should estimate the dimensions personally. The weight of 118g is usual for UMTS solutions. The use of plastic was dictated by the need for decreasing the total weight.

At the front panel one can see the camera module and light diode flash situated a bit lower. Two volume buttons are situated on the left side of the phone, a traditional for Motorola Smart-key is below, its capabilities depend on the menu settings (it can either be Push to Talk or selection of the current item).
A standard miniUSB connector is a little below, and it serves for connecting a charger. A camera button and access to voice functions are on the right side (in particular, it activates voice dial or triggers recorder on holding the button). A strap hole is on the top end.
The external display supports 65K colors and has the resolution of 96x80 pixels (21.1x17.8 mm). The display quality is medium, and the given STN matrix leaves much to be desired. The display fades in the sun and one can hardly make out the picture on it. On incoming call the assigned image is not shown full-screen, the photo or the image is rectangular and takes only a part of the display, which is no comfort to a user.
A semicircle light diode indicator made of transparent plastic is situated closer to the bottom end. Only red backlight color is available for the indicator, this one appears when charging the device or at some events (an incoming call, an organizer event, a message). It can light up smoothly and fade slowly, however that is no match to a full-functional color support, which was first realized in Motorola v80. At the same time the size of the indicator makes it act not as just an addition to the general phone's functionality, but as an important element of design and is seen well under any conditions. One may claim that this indicator breaks the integrity of the phone and mismatches its appearance. However the handset is positioned as a cheap solution, which justifies such an indicator. It should be also noted that some fashion models are now also supplied with only one backlight color.
The handset opens easily with one hand only: the spring is not very tough, which makes the motion easy. The internal screen is made by Sharp, which means it is one of the best of the kind. High quality picture and well processed details speak for themselves. The display is TFT and shows 262K colors. The screen resolution is 240x320 pixels (33.84x45.12 mm), which allows 7 text lines and tips for soft-keys use. The dot size forms 0.141 mm. From 16 to 24 characters can be placed in a single line. This screen even can't be compared with the one integrated into Motorola RAZR, its characteristics are higher. And even Motorola V3i loses in resolution rate. The display of the V3x is the best in the Motorola's product line for the moment.
There are two loudspeakers. A very stylish metallic grid on the back panel hides the main one. The loudspeakers are loud enough.
The back cover hides battery and memory expansion slot. The cover is fixed well, without any backlash. Hot card change is supported, but you will always need to remove the back cover, the card type is microSD (TransFlash). The SIM-holder is standard, and you can change the card without removing the battery which makes sense if you for instance travel by plane.
Keypad

The keypad block is made in traditional Motorola style: it is a metallic plate with etched keys. Despite the external similarity of the keypads, the impression of their use varies greatly. So, Motorola V3x has rubber protruded insertions between the buttons, which divide the keys. The technology is rather interesting. Cuts are etched on the first stage (for instance, letters and numbers). And then a rubber base is squeezed thought the received gaps. As it starts projecting above the surface, you can avoid looking at the keypad when dialing a number or dealing with other phone functions if you remember the key disposition. The key orange backlight is well seen in various conditions.
Due to body thickness which is greater than that of RAZR V3, V3x allows you to feel the key motion at pressure. The keys are comfortable to work with, and the key area is rather big, which makes them very pleasant. A keypad indicator activates the backlight only at complete darkness or in poor light.
Functionality
Camera:
The camera module is situated on the front panel as it was mentioned above. The CMOS camera has improved the quality of the pictures due to GoForce 4200 chip. The flash is rather bright and lights up to 2 meter radius which allows to shoot in complete darkness. It is better than the flashes in such phones as Sony Ericsson K750i, Sony Ericsson W900i and Nokia N71. Though disappointing is the fact that the developers did not include torch mode.
The construction of the camera is rather unusual. It is integrated into clamshell fold for the module is rather big and can not be installed in the thin upper part. There is no autofocus (considering the dimensions that is the only way possible) though there is an extra lens functioning as a macro objective. To change the mode one needs to shift the slide bar at the inner side of the handset. The mode switch does not take a lot of time which is very handy though the slide bar is quite tough.
With time and active use, the slide bar may get distorted and will need fixing of its position in guiding rails. Such construction implies potential problems provided the phone will fall frequently. However if treated it carefully, the slide bar will cause no problems. One should understand that the presence of this lens system is a forced compromise. It is impossible to combine comparatively small thickness and implement autofocus.
The company does not emphasize the glass lenses used in the phone. However to be precise, the objective is combined and consists of 4 elements, of which two are plastic and two glass ones. Glass lenses are used in macromode, which influences the photo sharpness and color saturation. A graphical chip GoForce 4200 processes the photos, which is now its only duty.
A VGA camera is situated to the left of the slide bar. It serves for video conferencing. Though you can also take photos with it (it is quite sufficient for a self portrait, as high resolution is not required).
Menu :

The model presents a mixture of earlier models functions, improved funcxtions introduced recently and new solutions which is not always optimal but which is rather neat. Like some exotic cocktails. And still we can't call the phone's adjustment detailed, as many functions seem rudiments, for instance, the absence of voice dial independent on the speaker's pronunciation (a peculiarity of all latest models). On the other hand normally organized phonebook allows forgetting about it. Yes, that finally happened, the company decided on implementing a normal full-fledged phonebook.

Phonebook

Up to 700 entries can be saved to the phone each of them including Name, Surname (two fields are available), Nickname, phone number (select its type of a list - home, work, mobile, fax and so on, available for videocalls or not). On typing a number you will get only one field, on filling it another one appears. Therefore the phone offers forming an entry step by step, which seems logical. In whole up to 7 numbers can be saved for one name, which is enough for the majority of users. Besides numbers you can enter e-mail addresses (up to 2), URL, a postal address (two fields for a street, city, state, area code, country). Also we should mention a text note, a personal call melody, users' groups (unlimited number, and each one can have a personal melody), and a birth date. Automatically the zodiac sign is calculated from the birth date and a corresponding entry appears when you view the name. Unfortunately, no automatic reminder about the birthday appears in the organizer, no sound signals. And I consider it to be the next step in improvement of the phonebook.

One can record voice entries, which is similar to the previous phones. The recognition works acceptably, but it still fails in noisy places. Each name can be assigned a photo or a graphical image. The general list shows names both from the phone memory and SIM-card (only one type is viewable at once). Search may be activated from several initial letters till a complete word. Three views of the list are available - names only with an icon of a default number, names and photos and the first phone number (a default one), names with a number. Horizontal pressing can scroll names rather fast. Any number can be added to the fast dial list and you can send a message or call a selected number in a pop-up menu.

This is the first time Motorola considered negative feedback of users and developed a separate function, and they did it well. Further improvement of the phonebook in next models will consist of more integration with the organizer and voice recognition not depending on the speaker's voice. Everything is plain and clear, and compared the best examples of the kind.

One of the peculiarities is contact receiving from other phones and when the names coincide two entries are created. If one of the entries has a Nickname field filled, then the contact will be displayed under this nickname.

Messages:

Up to 100 SMS can be saved though the number may differ depending on the software version. The carrier versions as a rule are restricted to 70. The hanset supports EMS . The massage list can be cleared completely automatically. There are also a list of templates.

Working with MMS is no problem everything is intuitively understandable. There are ten predefined templates like the ones available earlier which is nice The phone has POP3/IMAP4 e-mail client, it allows watching the headers of the incoming mail and download their body as well. Only graphical files, video, mp3 that do not exceed a certain size limit can be sent. In case you want to store some of the e-mails, you will have to use the dynamically spread memory
WAP

The phone has WAP-browser v2.0 and its possibilities are standard so nothing special can be said. GPRS (class 10) is present, the settings are rather simple, just follow your operator's instructions.

Call log

It includes received, last dialed (up to 10 numbers) and missed calls (which are marked by the absence of a tip). Not only the caller's name but the type of the number is shown, if it is kept in the phonebook. Everything is rather simple and traditional, nothing special at all

Applications include calculator, unit converter, memory options, shortcuts . Alarm clock has several modes each having a custom tone, time, frequency, name and volume. Recorder is rather disappointing. It is restricted to 60 seconds though it may be triggered while talking and record both interlocutors. The recorder definitely loses to the ones available now by its competitors. Organizer has either weekly or monthly mode detailed up to every hour. Each entry can be assigned with a name, start time, length (measured in hours, the minimal amount of time - 30 minutes). Warning can be set in advance. Each entry can be reoccurred which is a big plus. The task list was changed considerably, now you are allowed to select a category (None, Private, Holiday , Trip, Work), a status (Not started, In Progress, Completed, Waiting on Info, Deffered), priority (High, Low).

Games and applications:
The phone supports Java MIDP 2.0. The number of games and their title depends on where the phone was bought. The most often to find are Rebels (a space shooter), AspaltUrbanGT (races), BlockBreaker Deluxe (one of the best archaniods), Solitaire (patiene), Flee (game for children). Applications now include Safe program - once you've set a password, you can store confidential data about you bank account, passwords, addresses and so on. It resembles the ones in Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Siemens .
Multimedia

The phone supports themes that include wallpapers, color schemes for the menu, sounds and ring-tone types. New themes can be downloaded from Motorola site.

MotoMixer is an original sound file editor that allows mixing the tracks. You can play with it from time to time; the results may be rather unexpected. However as the practice shows, sound editors are nothing but a toy for most of the users despite of the manufacturers ads.

Sounds - information about all sound files saved in the phone's memory is stored here. You can check their size, info and even listen to them. The player is similar to other Motorola phones, everything is clear and easy to understand. The great advantage of this very player is reproducing mp3's in background. Besides an individual playlist can be arranged.

Settings :

Include display settings (e.g. color scheme), ring tone mode (silent, sound only, vibrate only or mixed), security settings (now you can protect some functions with a password, which may be the phonebook, messages, or some other phone sections), Bluetooth settings (the supported standard is 1.2).

Memory :

62 Mb of integrated memory are available to user plus the same volume for system (the user can not see it). The interesting fact is that the system requires 32Mb only. An executable Java application (JAR) is restricted to 1Mb while HEAP can take up to 2Mb. It makes no difference whether one uses integrated or expansion memory though the interface speed for integrated memory is lower (logically it should be vice versa) which shows on bitrate (the recommended bitrate for the phone's memory is 64 kbps and for the card – 128kbps). These restrictions are not really serious they are just recommended by the manufacturer. The phone reproduces files with 256 kbps or an alternating bitrate perfectly; problems appear very rarely for some very specific music compositions. The application memory is allotted dynamically.

Battery :

The Battery is Li-Ion 820 mAh (BC60, like the ones in "slim" models e.g. the L7). The manufacturer manufacturer claims it is capable of up to 200 hours of work in the standby mode and up to 4 hours of talks. Provided you talk 50 minutes, listen to the music for an hour and use functions minimally per day the battery will last for 2 days. If you have active Bluetooth and use a headset for a close number of calls a day, you will have the battery life 10-15 percent reduced. The longest battery life we observed reached 2.5-3 days at the minimal number of calls (that is how long the mobile phone lasted in London ). Thus, you should rely on one-two days of stable work in the best coverage conditions. Using stereobluetooth-earphones to listen to music will reduce the battery life drastically. The battery may discharge completely in some ten hours, and then you will have to spend about two hours recharging it. If you connect the phone to a PC via a cable, it will start recharging, but certainly the recharging will last much longer.

Pluses
  • Well developed functionality
  • Main screen
  • Handy keypad

Minuses
  • EDGE is not provided in the first shipped phones
  • receiver
  • GoForce 4200 works with camera only

Conclusions and impressions:

The model has no problems with the connection quality being a typical modern handset. all the model is interesting as a cheap UMTS solution. Without a contract the price forms 450-500 USD, and in the beginning of March retail price will form 350-400 USD. This handset is interesting for the general functionality, a good screen, the absence of direct rivals. Siemens SXG75 could pretend on this role if it were modern enough but not a previous generation phone. Direct comparison of these two phones and their functions revealed that the Siemens' product lost even at a higher price. You shouldn't wait for this model, though it tries to play on the same field as Motorola V3x. The V3x will have moderate sales on open non-operator markets, and nevertheless future models based on this phone will be of greater interest.
