Appearance and design

BenQ Mobile releases the new S75. As the index helpfully shows us it is to crown the 75 th series. Setting aside 3G models that virtually belong to the same line, the S75 has truly become the most advanced phone having embraced latest innovations of the company.

The first impression is the phone got much smaller if compared to its predecessor the 65th one. Its weight is 99 gram. The measurements of the phone are 103 mm x 47 mm x 18 mm. The device is designed in the classical monoblock form-factor. The front face is made from varnished plastic. If the quality of surface brings back memories of your favourite piano do not wonder for the black variant of the phone is called “Piano Black”. A silver variant called "Zirconia" also looks rather attractive.

A display naturally occupies the upper part of the front face. The quality of matrix is beyond praise. The screen does not fade even in direct sunrays. The phone displays 262 thousand colours and has a resolution of 132 x 176 pixels. The matrix diagonal is 1.8 inches. The screen does not seem to be as huge as it does with 65 th series phones, but it does not evoke any negative feelings . The display is framed in a narrow silver edging.

The loud speaker is set in a front face slit over the screen and is covered with a stylish silvery mesh. Below it one can see a logotype of the producer (which is still Siemens).

Along the side perimeter of the device goes a black mat edging situated right between two silvery verges. On the left side surface there are Infrared port and paired buttons for camera activation and quick connection “Push to talk”. On the right side board a swing for volume control is situated.

At the bottom of the device there is an interface slot. A bit higher one can find a memory card slot. To get it out one should take something like a toothpick and push a tiny button on the right from the card. The usage of a ball-point pen is highly inadvisable for the letter tends to leave tracks on the rubber cork.
The backside of the phone is silvery-white. At the upper part a digital camera block is situated. It includes flashlight, lens and a mirror for self-portrait picturing. The lens is deeply sank in the case to prevent it from any accidental scratches. A bit to the left from the camera block there is a hollow for external antenna.
Under the removable cover a Lithium Ion, 820 mAh battery finds its place. Under conditions of 10-15 minutes of talking, receiving/sending 10-15 SMS per day and not very intense use of player the battery charge lasted for two days. In the mode of constant music reproduction the telephone held out a bit more then 5 hours, which is a rather respectable result. The Sim-card holder is a traditional one with a transverse bridge.
The quality of case assembling is on a good level. The plastic details are adjusted firmly, nothing creaks or wobbles. In all internal memory makes 20MB. The immediate change of memory card is supported.
Keypad
The lower part of the face is allotted for a keypad. As the space is lacking the keys turned out to be rather small, however they considerably protrude over the board. These keypad peculiarities do not make any problem unless the user has some medical contra-indications.
For the first time two new keys were added. One of them (a special note is drawn on it) activates media player that can now work in background mode, the other is responsible for browser so the central joystick key is relieved of that function. Joystick is not 100% convenient. The side shifts are not a matter of concern but the central confirmation button is not quite handy.
The keys movement is distinct and resilient and their protruded form is ideal for blind typing. The backlight disappoints a bit for its ununiformity is rather noticeable, although it is not a tragedy. Almost all digital and soft keys can be appointed for quick access from waiting mode.

Functionality

Camera
The phone uses 1.3 MP CMOS matrix. The maximum resolution makes 1280?1024. The average size of a picture is 250-330 KB. On the phone display the shots do look too impressive, though on PC they produce a rather worthy effect.
As to the images processing grayscale, green, orange, purple a.o. are available. The picture can be saved either on the phone memory or on the memory card. There are 3 types of adjustments – automatic, outdoors and indoors. As to the possible resolution there are such variants: maximum (1280x1024), high (640?480), usual (320?240), low (160?120) background picture (132?176). The integrated flashlight can also be used in a torch mode. The devise is not meant for shooting objects that move quickly.
The total length of a recorded video file depends on the memory card and phone memory capacity however it can not exceed an hour and a half. Among additional track length adjustments one can find settings for long or short MMS message. The sound recording may be turned off while shooting. The maximum quality has resolution 176?144, the common one 129x96. Digital zoom and brightness adjustment is also available. The phone can reproduce tracks in full screen mode. There are no problems with reproducing files recorded with the help of some other outer sources.
Menu:
The given matrix has three icons horizontally and four of them vertically. If compared to the previous ones the icons seem to be a real graphical boom. The increase in number of icons emerged due to detachment of several positions into autonomous points. So Internet browser and games now go separately. Media player and Alarm clock were also separated.
Phonebook
On opening the menu a user gets to the screen with two possible ways of shifting (vertical through the list of subscribers and horizontal allows to see common list, caller groups, SIM and phone books and filter)

The common list shows all numbers both from SIM card and phone memory. In setting one can chose parameters to view (including first name, company etc.) The quantity of symbols is not limited. Every entry in the book has an icon of belonging to either SIM card or phone memory. It also provides 10 groups. One can not add additional groups so the available ones should be renamed. Every group can be assigned a common ring tone and a picture. On incoming call the picture is displayed not full screen but about a quarter of the whole available space.

According to the official information the capacity of the phonebook makes 1000 contacts, each of them having possibility for 4 telephone numbers, assigning ring tone, picture or video file, e-mail, site, address and fax number.

The contact can be placed in one of the available groups, note down his/her birthday (on that the note will be made in the calendar automatically), make a short text remark. In the common list only one phone number is displayed. The others are available on opening the entry. The photo is represented in the common list as an icon.
Call register
It includes missed, received and dialed calls. Every entry is displayed with indication of time and duration of the call. The total number of calls exceeds 20 items of each kind. According to specification it should comprise not less then 100 items of each kind. Any number can be saved in the phonebook.
Internet

In options of this item one can find a familiar phone assistant. Other options include URL entering, a list of bookmarks, connection registry and list of saved pages, WAP browser 2.0 supporting HTTP protocol. However the access settings are in the common Setting menu.

Messages
The phone memory can store up to 100 messages. The old messages can be transferred to archive. The quantity of MMS and letters received is limited only by the free memory space. All messages are displayed in one list. Using joystick horizontally one can look through the messages saved on memory card.
SMS messages
The text can be pasted (as a pattern or a sign), the phone also supports emoticons. The very emoticones differ greatly from those used by phones CX and M of the same 75th series. They are small and are displayed on screen as ANSI symbols. Among other options is supporting T9 dictionary, user dictionary, quick switch of input languages, EMS and Nokia Smart Messenger formats.
MMS messages and e-mail
An object (a picture, video or sound file, contact) can be added to MMS message. Unsent MMS message is automatically saved to draughts. E-mail message can include any file stored on memory card or on the phone memory. A received message can be printed out through IR port or Bluetooth. While working with messages one can create personal patterns.
Organiser

A very profound menu item that includes calendar, meetings, tasks, notes, voice recorder, time zone, remote synchronization.

The calendar has 3 view modes – month, week and day. As event one can choose call, meeting, birthday, vacation etc. Repeating events are supported. All events can be supplied with reminders. The total capacity of the calendar makes 1000 events. The general memory is available for writing messages down.

The voice recorder allows to record without time restrictions. The only limiting factor is memory capacity.

The remote synchronization uses SyncML protocol for distant phone-outer server synchronization. Contacts, meetings, tasks and notes can be included to the base.
Games

In the final release version there will be 4 games installed. Games of S65th were also successfully adopted. Total capacity of available memory is used to load Java. There are no restrictions as to Java applets from memory card. Therefore new applications, imagess, music are not necessarily taken from WEB interface. Siemens devices were always good at file system operations freedom and handiness. Luckily the given model does not make an exception.

Media player

For the first time a multimedia processor imageson 2182 by ATI Technologiesis integrated into the phone. It allows to reproduce aac Plus, MP3 and Real Audio (Rm support was promised in the next version release)

As to multimedia capability the device can keep Sony Ericsson competition. The keypad includes a special key activating media player that can now work in background mode. Such codecs are installed FR/EFR/AMR-FR/HR/AMR-HR. Also the editing of play list is possible where any file from phone or memory card can be included.

Alarm clock

The logic of the producer is not understandable for the alarm clock was made a separate item of menu. There is only one alarm clock. The days of its triggering can be appointed individually but setting different time for working days and weekends can not be done. For the alarm tune you can choose one of 51 ring tones. You can also set any other tune on your phone including MP3 and aac. For the business class model the alarm clock settings are too ascetic.

Other functions

Traditionally the telephone has such applications as a calculator, a unit converter, a voice recorder, a stop-watch and a timer. The timer has settings for boiling eggs, rice, vegetables, macaroni and potato. This service looks rather extraordinary.

There are also novelties such as On-line status and date estimation. The former allows to set profile for Instant Messenger and the latter allows to specify how many years, months, days, minutes and seconds are left to some certain term.
My folder

It represents a simplified file manager. It displays folders with sounds, imagess, video, themes, games, applications, assistant folder etc. Besides there is a folder with skins and conversion files. A standard set of functions for folders managing (such as renaming, moving, copying, deletion) are not available. As additional feature there is an option of formatting memory card and its safe removal. However the card is removed correctly without any additional safety tricks.

Settings
For the major part the settings are standard that is why we will dwell only on some novelties. Special settings for vibrating alert are added. Now it has number of variations each of which has its own name. Now not only tune or images but also an unordinary vibrating alert may be assigned practicaly to every event. In whole there are 6 such modes of vibration.
After vibro was set it works independently from the kind of the melody set.
This model has become the first in the Siemens series where data transfer through EDGE protocol became possible.
All other settings are standard. To the drawbacks of settings one can assign impossibility of setting time of backlight duration. For reading a long SMS messags standard time is not always enough.

  • supporting WORD and PDF files

Minuses:
  • camera 1.3Mp
  • thick body
  • doubtful ergonomics of keypad

Conclusions and impressions:

The loudness of the phone is quite sufficient even for very noisy places. Compared to CX/M models the phone has a full functional media player that uses a new ATI processor. A great advantage of the phone is RealOne Player8. Video can now be viewed in a full screen mode with any turn. Previously Siemens did not spoil us with such features (not counting smartphone SX1)

An excellent display doesn't fade even in the direct sunrays. Especially impressive looks a vibrating alert. In intensity it does not yield to the best models. There is also a pleasant possibility to set different kinds of vibrations on different sorts of messages and calls. Of course such things as EDGE support, new Bluetooth version, full fledged IR port, integrated e-mail client play to the advantage of the phone. The changes to the best have also occurred in localization.

The only thing left is to wait to the final release and first sale results.

We turn reader's attention to the fact that we tested only a pre-production model that can be different in some minor details from the final version.
